Dynamic thermal management (DTM) is to match the cooling capacity & airflow to the exiting load requirements inside white space, since servers heat dissipation is dynamic, the cold air supplied by cooling units must be also dynamic, this can be achieved by installing wireless sensors on the supply side of each rack to continuously measure servers supply air temperature and send readings to artificial intelligent software which act as a brain that controls cooling units to make sure that servers are operating in the recommended temperature range.
Below DTM continuous process:
Benefits of DTM:
- Very quick results.
- Capacity planning.
- Ease of installation.
- Solve hot spot issues.
- Constant enhancement.
- White space thermal map.
- Immediate energy saving (OPEX saving).
To get best results before applying DTM the following must be done:
- Close raised floor openings/cable entries with brushes.
- Install blanking panels to prevent hot air circulation.
- Make sure all servers are installed correctly (front in the cold aisle & back in the hot aisle).
The future of DTM & virtualized cloud environment in data centers:
Controlling cooling units and servers processing power will unleash dynamic thermal management full capabilities, since virtualization software will be capable of directing data processing on virtual machines operating at low temperature and reduce data processing on virtual machines operating at high temperature, accordingly cooling and processing power will change together to meet the most efficient operating conditions.
